Ok I have tried to google this but I can’t seem to find anything on how to become a licensed contractor. I have done a few DIY projects growing up, building decks, patios, demo, likes of designs and crafts… I know that I am far from being a professional contractor and I wouldn’t try to work on anyone’s house with the experience I have, but I want to know how to go about LEARNING more of the actual building and crafting that goes with contracting. I heard there isn’t much schooling for it but i don’t know of any other way to learn. I plan on asking different contractors around where i live if they would like a part time worker for the summer or even a volunteer just so i can learn more. I am asking anyone who is a contractor how they become it. How did you learn all the stuff you know. I know i want to specialized in bathrooms and kitchens, or landscaping. I see all the shows on DIY like bathtastic, yard crashers…I want to know how to become those guys. Please any help would be amazing cause i am really stuck on this. Thanks

My husband and I bought a 50+ year old house a little over three years ago. We have a 200 square foot addition on the back that was built improperly by a previous owner. It has a beautiful brick fireplace in it, but the rest of the room’s structure is failing because of faulty construction. So we are hiring a contractor to tear the room down to the bare concrete slab, which used to be the patio (the room was never tied in to the original house, so not much will have to be done). We are thinking of saving the fireplace and hearth though, and use it as a freestanding outdoor fireplace since it is just too nice too destroy. I think that since we are losing value on our home by having to demo the room then maybe we can at least gain some by saving the big brick fireplace. I want to build a pergola around it and the patio to maximize our yard/patio potential (with an outdoor chandalier handing down from the pergola, maybe adding some flowers and vines growing up the top). Any advice or information on what to expect when making the fireplace an outdoor one would be appreciated. Thanks!
*By the way, it is a wood-burning fireplace, with gas connection but the gas is capped off.

I’d like to get a new fence, a new deck, and a new patio. I am not handy and do not want to attempt any of these projects myself. Is it cheaper to hire one company to do all three projects, or to hire a company that does just fences, just does decks, etc?

I already priced out fences, but I’m wondering if I should just hire a local landscaping contractor for either all three projects or just the patio and deck together. What do you guys think?

Also… does anyone want to venture a guess as to how much 14×14 patio and a 5×16 foot deck would cost in York County, Pennsylvania?

Had a “mom and pop” type company build us a patio with cover and pergola (it came out beautifully). They did an execllent job, but my husband had agreed to an extra 250 because the city codes had changed. I’m thinking they should have known that when they bid the job and they should have to eat the difference. Oh and by the way, when they came to collect, she said he “verbally agreed” on $350 even though I was there when she called the first time and quoted 250. It’s really a shame that people who do such good work have to resort to what I think is practically extortion.
But back to the original question. If a contractor makes a bid and then finds out he was a little low, that’s not a “change order” is it? I still think it’s his mistake and he should have to eat it no matter how evil his wife is.
Actually, they said the law had changed in 2005 after hurricane Rita, but were just implimented last year after Ike. Shouldn’t they have checked? It’s written as an “estimate”, but also says the price is firm unless we want to make changes in which case that’s a “change order”. Never says anything about laws changing being on us.
